The State Key Lab of Software Engineering (hereinafter referred to as the laboratory) was built with the approval of the government in 1985 and it has opened itself to the public after it passed the acceptance evaluation in 1989. The current director of the Academic Committee is academician Mei Hong and the laboratory chief is Professor Xu Baowen. There are 50 researchers at the lab, including 28 professors and 13 associate professors.

Focusing on software engineering along with data management and information security, the lab has studied the theories, methods, technologies, standards, infrastructure, and typical applications involved in service-oriented software engineering, developing and verifying sophisticated software, software analysis and tests and quality control, as well as data management and data mining for trusted software and software engineering. In the last five years, the lab has undertaken and completed 213 research projects, including one project of 973 program, 12 projects of 863 program, and 5 key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Researchers at the lab have 1123 papers published in domestic and international journals as well as at international summits. The journals include IEEE Trans. on Computers, IEEE Trans. on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Journal of  Selected Areas in Communications, and IEEE Trans. on Communications, and the international summits include ICSE, FSE, OOPSLA, AAAI, VLDB, and SIGIR.  The lab has also 14 books published. It has won one second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and six first prizes of Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Award. The lab has 45 authorized invention patents, 3 utility models, and 47 software copyrights. The lab has developed with other parties five ISO standards and four national standards.

The lab focuses on academic cooperation and exchanges, and has established extensive contact with well-known domestic and international universities and research institutions. Over the last five years, the lab has hosted 12 international and domestic academic conferences, organized for famous domestic and international scholars and experts to author 126 academic reports, selected key members in academic fields for 120 trips to domestic and international academic exchanges, and authored 14 special reports at important domestic and international academic conferences.

The Lab boasts a favorable environment for research. It has an office building of more than five thousand square meters and equipment worth over 70 million yuan, of which there are 16 pieces of equipment worth at least 300,000yuan, including high-performance computing systems, grid computing systems, software testing system, three-dimensional simulation system, cloud computing platform, analysis and design modeling software platform.

Following the policy of "openness, mobility, collaboration, and competition" as well as the major needs of the nation, the lab researches software engineering principles and applications, solves key technical problems in software engineering, and transforms scientific research achievements. We will strive to develop our lab into a leader in software engineering that is capable of research and innovation, and that can serve society. In turn our lab will become a key research base, a personnel training base, and an academic exchange center for domestic and international software engineering.
