Global Fifth IGS Data Center is to be Located in Wuhan University

(Correspondent: Li Min and He Xiaodan) Recently, the Chairman of the International GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Service (IGS for short) sent a formal notification, authorizing the Satellite Navigation and Positioning Technology Research Center of Wuhan University to establish the fifth global IGS Data Center.

The Data Center will provide global GNSS users with international IGS base station data, GNSS precision satellite orbit and clock difference, earth rotation parameters and other data services for free. It will change China GNSS users’ complete dependence on foreign data and increase the downloading speed of GNSS data from tens of KBs per second to several MBs per second.

Meanwhile, the Satellite Navigation Research Team of our university plans to use the Data Center as a platform to release data and precision products of Beidou Navigation Satellite System, and expand its international application.

The International GNSS Service was established in 1993. It is an international organization focusing on academic cooperation and information services, supported by the government agencies of many countries. IGS’ Data Center and Analysis Center members are all world first-class research institutions in satellite navigation, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of US (JPL), the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Over the twenty years, IGS has played a huge role in promoting the advancement of satellite navigation technology.

The Satellite Navigation Research Team of our university built the first IGS Analysis Center beyond the European and American Area in August 2012. The team generated GNSS centimeter-level ultra-rapid precise satellite orbit and clock products and gave them to IGS to produce official products. According to IGS’ assessment, the quality of the products generated by the Analysis Center of Wuhan University is in top 3 among all the nine analysis centers in the world. So far, Wuhan University is one of the three research institutions that have both IGS Analysis Center and Data Center in the world. This marks that the Satellite Navigation Research Team of our university takes a leading position in GNSS research and will play a more important role and make more contribution in global high-precision GNSS research.
