GNSS Research Center (GRC) of Wuhan University (WHU), founded in January 1998, focus on the fundamental research on satellite navigation and positioning as well as other related disciplines, the applications of new technology, and talents cultivation. The advantages of well-built disciplines related to GNSS, talents cultivation, and international cooperation at WHU provide great opportunities for the development of GRC. In order to satisfy the demand of the establishment and applications of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), GRC focus on the frontier key technology and terminals of GNSS, and its applications. Meanwhile, GRC is going to be a base for exploring and developing the new technology, methodology, and applications of GNSS system, as well as training high quality persons in this field. The aim of GRC is to be a world-class research and innovation institute on GNSS. Currently, GRC operates the following six research centers.

♦ National Engineering Research Center of Satellite Navigation and Positioning, Ministry of Science and Technology

♦ Key Laboratory of Satellite Navigation and Positioning (B class), Ministry of Education

♦ Key Laboratory of Navigation and Location-based Service, National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation

♦ Joint Research Center of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, Ministry of Education

♦ Research Center of General Technology of Satellite Navigation, Ministry of Education

♦ Joint Research Center of Crustal Movement Observation Network of China, Ministry of Education

♦ Analysis Center, International GNSS Service

Besides, GRC is also the global data center of International GNSS Service, International GNSS Assessment and Monitoring System (iGMAS), and BeiDou Experimental tracking stations (BETS).

In recent years, GRC has been undertaking 11 projects funded by the 863 program, 4 projects sponsored by the 973 program, and 30 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). GRC has also taken part in one national major scientific and technological infrastructure construction project, European Union FP6 project, and other international cooperation projects. Besides, more than 30 research projects funded by provincial or ministerial government, e.g. Science and Industry Commission of National Defense, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, and Hubei Province Government, as well as over 300 engineering projects and programs have also been hosted by GRC. Up to now, GRC has been awarded National Science and Technology Progress Award (second class) twice, Science and Technology Progress Award at provincial and ministerial level (first class) in six times, Outstanding Contribution to BeiDou Navigation Satellite System by General Armament Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Science and Technology Progress Award of PLA, as well as Science and Technology Progress Awards at provincial and ministerial level (second class and third class) in ten times.

GRC widely participate in the international exchange and cooperation, and strive to keep the technology in the same level as the aboard counterparts. In the same time, to promote the industrialization of navigation productions and extend the application market, GRC also provides technique supports for various companies, e.g., Wuhan Navigation and Location-based Service Industry Co., LTD., Wuhan Tai Tong Satellite Technique Co., LTD., Huizhou Hua Yang Corporation, Sichuan Jiu Zhou Electronics Co., LTD., Wuhan Tian Ren Satellite Survey Co., LTD., Hubei Sai Pu Gao Xin Technology Development Co., LTD.
