Website news (Correspondent: Liang Chao): Using only one photo, how a person would look against different backgrounds, under different lighting conditions, or even wearing different clothes can be identified. This achievement of Prof. Hu Ruimin from School of Computer Science has recently won the only Best Paper Award at this year’s Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia.
The paper is titled “Region-based Interactive Ranking Optimization for Person Re-identification”. Its authors are the doctorate students Wang Zheng and Hu Ruimin, and Dr. Liang Chao. It is the consensus of the conference’s reviewer committee that “this method is sufficiently simple and fast, making it an effective solution to important problems in real applications.”
“Person re-identification” refers to using extant photos of a person to search for photos of the same person, taken by different equipment, from the massive data of the internet. Smart query technologies have developed rapidly in recent years, and person re-identification, as one of the key technologies, have received widespread attention from the fields of urban security and criminal investigations, and detection and analysis of consumer behaviors. It is one of the key big data analysis technologies recommended for development by the “Big Data and Privacy: A Technological Perspective” report from the U.S. President’s Science Advisor.
For several years, Prof. Hu’s team has been dedicated to the research of smart video analysis for urban security. They provided a proposal and participated in the planning and implementation of the state government’s key “Safe Cities” program, and headed the preparation of China’s first urban safety technological standard. Since the beginning of this year, they have achieved remarkable results in person re-identification and super-resolution of human face, publishing one paper at a CCF Class A journal, and 3 papers at Class B journals. The “criminal video data analysis system” of which they led the development, has been widely adopted in the criminal investigation practice around the country, making a great contribution to social safety and stability.
It is known that Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia is one of the most important conferences in multimedia studies, intended to facilitate the exchange of new technologies in the analysis and search, safety, compression, networking, etc. of multimedia. The annual conference has been successfully held for 14 times, with one Best Paper Award given reach time. In the last three years, the award is won by National University of Singapore, City University of Hong Kong, and Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2013), all of which are leaders in the multimedia search field.
