Website news (Reporter: Yang Xue) On July 31, the latest achievement of the research group led by Professor Fu Xiangdong of the School of Life Science on “New regulatory mechanism of mitochondrial middle and little RNA” was published on the top-class international journal, Cell. All the work of the research is completed in the School of Life Science of Wuhan University. The doctoral student Zhang Xiaorong is the first author, and the corresponding author is Professor Fu Xiangdong, the chair professor of Cheung Kong Scholars, member of1000-Talents Plan (Class-B).
The title of the paper is “MicroRNA Directly Enhances Mitochondrial Translation during Muscle Differentiation”. The mitochondrion referred to in the paper exists in all the eucaryotic cells. It’s a semi-autonomous organelle which has the transcription and translation system of its own. It mainly provides direct energy ATP to vital movement. Meanwhile, it participates in the metabolism, signal transduction of cell and programmed cell death. The research uncovered the new regulatory mechanism of the mitochondrial gene expression, and provided new explanation to development procedure of muscle cell.
In recent 9 years, with supernormal investment of time and energy, as well as powerful academic leadership, Professor Fu Xiangdong has supervised many graduates or young teachers to publish paper on top-class international journals. In 2007, a co-authorship paper by them is published in GENES & DEVELOPMENT (IF15.05); in 2009, the teachers and students of his laboratory published a paper in Trends in Cell Biology (IF 12.1) under his instruction; in 2011, a co-authorship paper by them is published in Trends in Cell Biology (IF 12.1); in 2012, they published a paper in Molecular Cell (IF14.2); in 2013, they published two papers in Cell (IF34.4). This paper published in Cell is the first paper published on Cell of the school which is totally based on domestic research. The first author, doctoral student Zhang Xiaorong spent 8 years to complete the significant research.
Professor Fu Xiangdong not only leads an excellent laboratory for Wuhan University, but also communicates actively with the teachers and students of the school passing on his rich academic experience to teachers and students of Wuhan University.
