Website news (Correspondent: Wang Song) On April 21, seven academicians from Department of Civil, Hydraulic and Architecture Engineering of Chinese Academy of Engineering, namely Zhou Fulin, Wang Hao, Ma Hongqi, Wang Mengshu, Zheng Jielian, Zhang Chaoran and Miu Changwen, visited Wuhan University, accompanied by president Li Xiaohong and vice president Li Jiancheng.

In the Exhibition Hall of Surveying and Mapping Instruments, Prof. Hua Xianghong, Director of Experiment Center of the School of Geodesy and Geomatics, introduced the development of surveying and mapping instruments, from the earlier vernier and optical theodolites to modern electronic theodolites. One academician enquired about the proportion of the domestically-made instruments. Mr. Li Jiancheng explained that most of core components of highly sophisticated surveying and mapping instruments were imported from foreign countries, but the portion of domestically-made instruments was increasing, and as we had made great breakthroughs of core technologies, e.g. regional precision height datum, with our own intellectual property rights, the dependency on imported instruments would be furthur reduced.

After leaving the Exhibition Hall, the academicians were interested into the AutoMapper-series multi-platforms mobile mapping vehicle developed by School of Geodesy and Geomatics. They stopped and watched it working. Prof. Yan Li, vice dean of School of Geodesy and Geomatics, introduced that this system integrated high precision 3D laser scanning technology, satellite-inertial combined positioning and orientating technology and 360 degree high-definition panoramic imaging technology, it was featured with flexibility, short cycle, high precision, high resolution and real-time multi-source data fuse, and it had been well used in various fields including smarter city, tourism, urban management, public security and intelligent navigation. After listening to this, the academicians expressed their praises.

At the forum, Prof. Gong Wei, Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Prof. Liu Yaolin, dean of School of Resource and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Yao Yibin, dean of School of Geodesy and Geomatics, and Prof. Jiang Weiping, Deputy Director of State Research Center of GPS Engineering and Technology, made reports to introduce general conditions and recent developments. The academicians highly appraised the achievements in surveying and mapping engineering.

In Sediments Laboratory of the School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, the chief scientist Prof. Li Yitian introduced the development process of the lab and its research outcomes in sediment disaster formation mechanism, river and lake alluvial process integrated simulation technology and low water waterway shaping research in both theories and practice, and he also presented the model of Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge watercourse and introduced what an important role the lab had played in regulation of Yangtze River golden waterway. The academicians had an interest in the issues concerning sediment erosion and deposition, waterway regulation and river simulation technology etc. and had an interactive discussion with the scientists.

The guests from the Second Division of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the leaders and department heads of our university attended the activities.
