Website news (Reporter: Fu Xiaoge) China Alumni Network recently released the latest assessment of Chinese universities. Nine Chinese universities including Wuhan University were listed among top 500 in three world university rankings in 2014 and they were therefore called the “Nine best Chinese universities in the world university rankings (G9 Group for short)”.
Times Higher Education, QS and USNews are three internationally acknowledged and most influential world university assessment authorities. The 2014 top 500 lists of the three rankings covered thirty higher education institutions from mainland China, of which nine, namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Nanjing University, were listed among Top 500 in each of the three rankings.
Wuhan University remains with the Top 400 in each of the three rankings: 301th in USNews Ranking, 335th in QS Ranking and 352th in Times Higher Education Ranking.
Mr. Cai Yanhou, professor in Central South University and chief expert at Universities Research Team of China Alumni Network, said that the nine universities were first-class research institutions in China with the highest level of internationalization, the largest international influence, the strongest international competitiveness and the most contribution of talents and science & technology, and so they merited the name “G9 Group”. He also pointed out that what we should do is to establish world class universities and university assessment indicator system with Chinese characteristics, rather than simply copy the assessment mode of foreign countries or assess universities just in terms of the performance in science and technology. “Chinese characters” need to be highlighted in world university assessment and the standing of Chinese university group among world university groups.
