Pocketing Six National Awards in Science and Technology in 2014

Website news (Reporter: Fu Xiaoge) On January 9, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council held the 2014 National Conference for Science and Technology Awards, and Wuhan University pocketed six awards. The team of earth observation and navigation technology received the Innovative Team Prize in classification of National Award for Progress in Science and Technology. Two programs presided over by the team were honored the second prize of National Technological Invention Award and the second prize of National Award for Scientific and Technological Advancement respectively and three research outcomes made jointly by the team and others were honored the second  prize of National Award for Scientific and Technological Advancement respectively.

The Innovative Team Prize was established in 2012 and nine teams have received this prize so far. Wuhan University is the second regular institution of higher education that received this award after Tsinghua University.

Members of the team include Li Deren, Liu Jingnan, Gong Jianya, Zhang Liangpei, Li Qingquan, Shi Chuang, Wu Huayi, Wang Mi, Chen Nengcheng, Zhao Qile, Chen Xiaoling, Zhu Xinyan, Sui Haigang, Liao Mingsheng, Zhang Guo and some other persons. Backing on the State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing and the State Research Center of GPS Engineering and Technology and under the leadership of the three academicians Li Deren, Liu Jingnan and Gong Jianya, more talents are attracted and an open, inclusive, aggressive, cooperative and excellence-pursuing culture has formed in the team, which is featured by the integration of theoretical research, technological innovation and industrial application. With focus on academic frontier and major national demands, the team has made a batch of international advanced achievements and has ranked among the most influencing teams in this academic field in the world.

Mr. Yang Yuanxi, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said in an interview that the team has “real” and “hard” power, and it aims at national demands and academic frontier, integrates theory and practice and has abundant research outputs which are of good utility, it’s a team having scientific research vitality and innovation motive and deserves the award.

In addition, the program titled Key Monitoring Technology and Application for Ultrahigh-frequency Partial Discharge of Gas-insulated Equipment, led by Prof. Tang Ju, School of Electrical Engineering was honored the second prize of   Technological Invention Award, and the program titled Wide-area Real-time Precision Positioning Key Technology and Its Application, led by Prof. Shi Chuang, State Research Center of GPS Engineering and Technology, was honored the second prize of Scientific and Technological Advancement Award.

Some research outcomes achieved by the involvement of our professors also received awards, for example, the program titled Key Purification Technology of Agents Used in Trace Analysis and Its Application which involves Prof. Feng Yuqi, College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and the program titled National Basic Geographical Information Updating Technological System and Its Engineering Application which involves Prof. Pan Li, School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, won the second prize of Scientific and Technological Advancement Award, and another special program which involves professors of our university also won the second prize of Scientific and Technological Advancement Award.

It is reported that in 2014, the National Science and Technology Awards were granted to 318 research outcomes, 8 scientific experts and a foreign organization. Mr. Yu Min, famous nuclear physicist, recipient of “Two Bombs and One Satellite” Achievement Medal and member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, received the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award.
